On 31st May, 33 Mackay Veteran golfers travelled to Sarina to play in the second round of the Mackay District Veteran’s Shield for 2018. This is an interclub event held amongst Lady and Men veteran golfers from Black Springs, Mackay, Pioneer Valley and Sarina Golf Clubs.

A good field of 108 players competed in the Single Stableford Medley event. The leading score of the day, 40 pts, was returned by Diane Holewa from Sarina. Peter Bourke (37 pts) and Dave Anderson (36pts) were the leading scorers from the Mackay representatives.

After each event, the points of the top eight scorers from each club are tallied. The Shield winner will be the club with the highest tally after all four rounds (one at each club) have been completed.

At their home tournament, Sarina compiled a great total of 305 pts, followed by Black Springs with 286, Mackay with 274 and Pioneer Valley with 256. As a result, after the first two round, Sarina is in a strong position to take to the Shield this year, with a total of 611 pts. Black Springs is second with 586, while Mackay (577) and Pioneer Valley (514) have a lot of “catching up” to do. The next round will be held at Pioneer Valley Golf Club on Thursday, 28th June. A nomination sheet is on the Vet’s Notice Board, and Lady and Men Veterans are encouraged to nominate by Friday, 22nd June. The cost is $25, which covers entry fees, and the light lunch which will follow the game. Individual prizes for the leading Ladies and Men are given, as well as a ball rundown. Cart hire is available at extra cost. Based on last year’s event, a good day will be had by all, so we encourage you to grab your clubs and head out to the Valley for a great day’s golf!
